Biblio-what?

EndNote, Zotero, RefWorks, ProCite, Reference Manager are all examples of Bibliographic Management Tools. These tools provide the capability to store and organize your research materials. You can export citations from databases and web sites, annotate, create bibliographies, and footnote from these tools. To learn more about these tools and to figure out which one is right for you and your research needs, go to Comparison of Features of Bibliographic Tool Managers. UC-Berkeley developed this helpful chart. While the prices are specific to UC's products, the chart compares the features of the tools that are the same across the board.

Yale Library offers workshops on how to use these tools. Check here for available dates and times.

Finding books

Locating books

To begin your research go to Orbis and type in keywords related to your gender image or stereotype. Examples could include a social role (mother, daughter, married, lesbian, housewife) or an occupation (women/female and CEO, nun, scientist)

After searching with keywords find some relevent titles and look at the subject headings in the item's record

Finding Visual Images

To find visual images:

Here is a great guide to locating digital images that are available. Some of these are only available to Yale students and others are freely available online.

Images of Women in Ancient Art

Womens Studies: Images & Photographs

Twentieth Century Advice Literature: North American Guides Race, Gender, Sex and Family (available through Database main menu on the Library's homepage) - lots of fun images and pamphlets documenting women in the 1900s

For your information

The Center for Media Literacy has put together a helpful guide, "How to Evaluate Media Images of Women."

You can also Google to find bibliographies and general overviews of image representations of women in ....  A good example is this essay about female athletes
