Country information, analysis, and intelligence

The databases below cover multiple countries and regions. The library also subscribes to many databases that are country- or region-specific. To find them, search the complete list of databases, using the "Any Word" search box (i.e. search for "china," "africa," "middle east," etc.).

Columbia Gazetteer of the World
Entries include information on many of the following: demography; physical geography; political boundaries; industry, trade, and service activities; agriculture; cultural, historical, and archeological points of interest; transportation lines; longitude, latitude, and elevations; and more. Their length varies from a brief notation on a small village to an essay on a country or region.

EIU (Economist Intelligence Unit) Country Reports, Country Profiles, Country Forecast, ViewsWire

  • Country Reports: Monthly analysis of political and economic trends.
  • Country Profiles: Annual perspective on economic and political status and background.
  • Country Forecast: Monthly regional reports on key issues affecting political and economic outlook and business environment over the next five years.
  • ViewsWire: Daily business intelligence on more than 200 countries.

Jane’s Online
Analysis of events and trends in political, security and military affairs with a detailed breakdown of global military and political structures for reference. Includes information on internal and external threats; p
olitical context, including personalities, parties and interest groups; foreign relations, disputes and alliance; military capabilities, including chain of command, doctrine and detailed inventory by service; insurgent forces and terrorist groups; defence expenditure statistics, plus analysis of procurement, production and research; security and foreign forces breakdown; strategic natural resources; demographic trends; infrastructure (roads, railways, airports, ports and waterways, telecommunications); economic indicators. Update frequency varies (most content updated weekly or monthly).

Political Risk Yearbook
Annual publication of 100 of Political Risk Services' Country Reports, which provide assessment of potential political, financial, and economic risks to business investments and trade.

Statesman’s Yearbook Online
Annual publication providing statistical and historical information on cultural, political, and economic aspects of the nations of the world.

STRATFOR
Provides geopolitical intelligence on political, economic, and military developments around the globe. Updated daily.

U.S. State Department Background Notes
Background Notes
include facts about the land, people, history, government, political conditions, economy, and foreign relations of independent states, some dependencies, and areas of special sovereignty. The Background Notes are updated/revised by the Office of Electronic Information and Publications of the Bureau of Public Affairs as they are received from the U.S. State Department's regional bureaus.
