Elections - USA: Official returns

These sources compile election results as reported by each state. Official election results do not include sociodemographic information about voters (such as age, race, gender, etc.) - for that information, see "Exit polls, election studies, and more" below.

Exit polls provide variables that official election results do not, such as gender, race, education, income, age, religious affiliation, and opinions on particular issues.

  • European Election Database (CIVICACTIVE)  
    Database of aggregated election statistics from European Parliament elections; national parliamentary and presidential elections as well as EU-related referendums held in EU member countries during the period 1990-2007.
  • IFES Election Guide  
    Covers national elections around the world, and other electoral events deemed of high interest; includes information on political parties and candidates, referenda provisions, breaking news on election-related laws and political developments around the world, governmental and electoral structures, and election results and voter turnout.
  • International IDEA Databases and Networks  
    Several different databases on democracy and elections worldwide, including a voter turnout database.
  • Lijphart Elections Archive  
    Descriptions of sources for district-level election results for approximately 350 national legislative elections in 26 countries. The Lijphart Elections Archive is no longer updated, but includes links to many online sources for current election statistics.
  • Mass Political Behavior and Attitudes (thematic category at ICPSR)  
    Look for the "Nations Other Than the United States" subsections.
  • National Election Studies and Data Collections  
  • National Elections across Democracy and Autocracy (NELDA)  
    "The National Elections across Democracy and Autocracy (NELDA) dataset provides detailed information on all election events from 1960-2006. To be included, elections must be for a national executive figure, such as a president, or for a national legislative body, such as a parliament, legislature, constituent assembly, or other directly elected representative bodies."
  • PARLINE: Recent parliamentary elections  
    Every parliamentary election in the world is reported in PARLINE. The results contain statistics on the distribution of votes and seats among political parties, as well as a breakdown of seats by sex and, when available, by the age and profession of members of parliament.
