These resources do not (generally) provide statistical/data information that would be analyzed for its own value; rather, they contain information that is useful or necessary for utilizing statistical/data information resources, such as codes used, or geographic correspondence information.  Also included here are terminology and methodology resources.

SimplyMap video tutorials

The following video tutorials introduce and describe different features of SimplyMap.  They contain no audio, so can be played at a public workstation in the library.  Please note that some of the videos may show a slightly older interface of SimplyMap than currently in production; if you notice any outright discrepancies between what the video shows and how SimplyMap works, please email support@geographicresearch.com (the vendor of SimplyMap) and Cc stefan.kramer@yale.edu.

  • Introduction  
    A quick introduction on what SimplyMap allows you to do.
  • Overview  
    An overview on how to get started with SimplyMap.
  • Legend Editor  
    How to use the Legend Editor to customize the maps you create - colors, no. of categories, data breakpoints, etc.
  • Variables  
    How to select variables to include in maps or statistical reports.
  • Queries  
    Queries allow you to combine several variables in order to define your own criteria for selecting locations.
  • Points  
    Points-of-Interest from Dun & Bradstreet (and in the future, possibly other sources) can be mapped and included in reports.
  • Ranking  
    The Ranking feature can be used to create and export lists of locations using any available data variable.

How NOT to do it

Examples of data, graphics, statistics being misunderstood, misrepresented, misused, etc. - possibly interesting examples for instructional purposes here.
