Articles With Market Share Information
Market share information often can be found in articles. Sometimes, the results of big, expensive market research reports can be found in articles and sometimes industry trade journals publish a state-of-the-industry report which contains market share information. Listed below are selected business databases in which these kinds of articles might be collected. Suggested Key Words for finding market share and trend information: "market share," "market size," ranking, trends, forecast, "market growth," "business growth," or "market potential." You might also try: sales, competitors/competition, and performance.

ABI Inform (via iConn) and Business Source Complete Contain a large collection of trade journals. Industry trade journals are often great places to find market-share, sales figures, pricing information, and company and brand name rankings. Don't worry if you don't know the name of your industry's trade journal – these databases let you sort your results by publication type. Enter your search terms (example: "soft drinks" and forecast) then when the results page loads, click on the Trade Publications tab. The resulting list will be articles found in trade journals only and scrolling down the list should reveal the titles of publications specific to your industry. (For instance, in the case of the above example, the publication Beverage World appears).

Onesource You can search for market share and trends in OneSource in a couple of ways. First, OneSource has gathered information about industries (including market share) into one place. To find the page on your industry you should first determine your industry's NAICS/SIC then follow these steps: After you logon chose to search by "INDUSTRY" (the second menu choice). Click on the US 1987 SIC button at the top of the left side frame. Then, chose your Industry from the list appearing in the right frame.

Market Share for a Company
If your company is a Public Company then try looking through their SEC Filings (this is particularly helpful if your company has recently filed a proxy or prospectus). You should also look up the company in OneSource. Next, try finding journal articles on that company in ABI Inform, Business Source Complete, and Factiva.

When looking for journal articles on the market share or trends for a particular company enter key words such as: company name and "market share" or company name and (trends or forecasts).

If you are looking for a Private Company then finding information will be more difficult. You may want to start with the company's web page; some times even private companies make their annual reports available to the public. Then try OneSource. Next try journal articles as above in Public Companies. Remember that if you have a small private company there may not be much (or any) information available.

International Information
Depending on which country you are interested in finding information for international market share data might take a little digging; but finding information on foreign markets is not impossible. Euromonitor GMID, ABI Inform and Business Source Complete carry some foreign, English-language publications (mainly those from the UK), and Factiva contains publications in several languages from around the world. The Worldscope section of Thomson Research contains filings from public companies worldwide.

American equity analysts will often cover other markets such as Canada, the EU countries, Japan, and Latin America. Business Insights and ISI Emerging Markets both contain information for non-US markets. Also try Mintel which includes market size and trends and market segmentation for the European and Anglo-American markets.
